Dog Park (Mickey's Heaven or Hell?)
Today embarked a day spent with man's best friend. Man's best friend can be anything, but most commonly, Man's Best Friend is his Dog. Mickey's permanent home (for now) is back in South San Francisco. When I have time off, I try to take care of him at my place. In my prior post, I mentioned about being way too tired from work, now I was fortunate to have FOUR consecutive days off! It was just a fluke on how our work schedule panned out. In my favor and I'm not complaning.
I decided to take Mickey for a nice walk. The weather has been beautiful for the past few days. Since I had nothing better to do for the day, I decided to get a good walk and spend valuable time with my dog. The East Bay Regional Park District reserved an area entitled, "Point Isabel Regional Shoreline" as a park enjoyed by dogs and their companions. The park consists of appoximately 23 acres of land to freely walk your dog. The nice aspect of a dog park, you can walk your dog "off-leash" in a safe environment. Mickey is rather uncontrollable on city streets which will put him in danger of being killed by a car driving on the street. In a dog park, he can roam the paths without danger of being hit by a car.
Mickey is not your typical small dog that will yap and bark at other dogs. He's pretty calm and reserved when around other dogs. To a certain extent, he's rather anti-social. He'll see another dog and back away or run from them. Sometimes he'll hide behind my leg when he's approached by a whole pack. The other dogs will do their traditional greeting of sniffing each other's ass. Mickey tends to tuck his tail.
I walked the entire park with Mickey off the leash. He was well behaved and listened to my commands. Usually at home, he only listens when he wants to. We walked all over exploring new territories, and Mickey marked his spots. I tried to get him to run freely on the large grass areas, but Mickey didn't want to walk no more than 25 feet from my sight. I think it's good that he wants to stay near. The other dog owners are really friendly. Many people would greet you and have small talk. A friendly environment for both the dog and the owners.
From my observation, Mickey liked the freedom away from the leash, but I think he still doesn't like to be approached by a pack of dogs. He plays tough at home, but a coward at the dog park. I'm happy that there are parks available to the public to use so they can enjoy the companionship with their pets. I'm also disappointed that I didn't bring my camera with me. Perhaps next time. I plan on taking Mickey to Point Isabel more often.
