There goes the diet!

I hate to say it...."I'm a fat ass!" Eleven days into the new year and I already broke the diet resolution. For those who know me; I'm a meat and potato type of guy. People usually think I'm big into Chinese food or other type of Asian cuisines because I'm Chinese. WRONG! Standing six feet two inches tall doesn't come from eating Chinese food all my life....maybe for the exception of living off Texas Long Grain Rice. If I had a choice between asian food or american food....I'd most likely choose American food.

The restaurant that broke my diet plan was Harry's Hofbrau. When people think of "hofbrau" they think of German food. When I think of hofbrau; I think open faced sandwiches with meat piled high, smothered with gravy! From what I'm told, hofbraus were places where you can grab a beer and a hearty meal to eat all under one roof. This place is definately the fix for any hungry man.

Just from visiting the website, I made the assumption that this was a franchise. Apparently there are only four locations throughout the Bay Area under the same owner. I've only been to Foster City location and currently the San Leandro location since it's only minutes away from home.

This place is not like your traditional sit down restaurant. To basically put it; it's cafeteria style. You tell the person behind the counter what your want, they carve the meat in front of you, and you bus your own tray. Simple enough for me. I would not consider this a place to impress a date, but better off a place to satisfy a hungry appetite.

So you ask....what's on the menu? Let the picture do the talking.

Yes, the special of my choice was the "Corned Beef and Cabbage with Potatoes and Carrots." Believe it or not, there's one more potato under all that meat and almost one half of a cabbage under there too covered in au jus. I would normally call the this St. Patrick's day special, but it doesn't hurt to celebrate a few months earlier! The corned beef was tender! Tender enough to cut with the just the touch of your fork. It was not fatty at all and was full of flavor. I was able to conquer this plate and the roll in one sitting! I was struggling till the last bite.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest), I'd rate Harry's Hofbrau at a SOLID 9. You can't get a better meal with nearly every meat you can think of and walk out with a smile of satisfaction on your face!

Until then, happy eating! Time to go back on the diet.

Mmmm, I love Harry's Hofbrau! I haven't been there in a long time, but I always get the Turkey dinner, or their open-faced sandwiches smothered in gravy.
