My Love/Hate Relationship with Chinese Food

Growing up as an American Born Chinese (ABC), I was obviously exposed to Chinese food. My parents whom are also ABC were fortunate enough to expose my sister and I to various different cultural cuisines as we were growing up. My girlfriend on the other hand only ate Chinese food as she was growing up, and still to this day, her parents cook only Chinese food. She also mentioned to me that she really was not exposed to different types of food until she entered college.

Most Americans have a liking to Chinese food. It's filling, inexpensive, different, somewhat healthy, and is well known as the default "take out" delivery food.

So you ask why the love/hate I have with Chinese Food?

It all started in the year 2000 when I went on a trip to China. For two weeks, we ate Chinese food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Aside from breakfast (dim sum), each meal was your typical 10 course+ banquet style dinner. In China, what else is there to eat (especially in the village areas)? In the big cities, a few western fast food places were available such as KFC, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut. I was so sick of eating Chinese food that I never had such a strong craving for good ol' American fast food in the big cities that we Americans are so accustom to. I'm sure there is more western food available now after the Beijing Olympics.

So ever since that trip to China, I didn't want to eat Chinese food ever again in the States. Guess what? I looked in the mirror. I'm Chinese! It hard for me to get away from this food. Aside from home cooked Chinese food, I didn't eat at a Chinese restaurant for awhile. If you asked me where to eat, and someone would mention "Chinese;" I would pass.

Now in today's economy, I find myself eating more Chinese food. It's cheap! It's fulfilling. So it's more of a survival staple. I've learned to re-love Chinese food temporarily again until I get sick of it again.

For now, I'm just waiting for someone to call for a burrito run.
