Tired of Telemarketers!!!

Every morning, I'm awaken by annoying telemarketers calling about free cell phone promotions, mortgage refinancing, carpet cleaning, newspaper subscriptions, and satellite dishes promotions. I get enough calls to the point where I'm tempted to buy caller id. Since I get so many calls on our home telephone, I've decided to have a little fun with the people who call. Too bad it's illegal to record the conversations, because some of the phone calls I reply to are hilarious. I know that they record on their side.

This morning I got a call that I know is out sourced from India. You obviously can tell because of the long distance "echo" and the strong accents of the caller. The promotion was for a free Sprint Cell Phone. You could totally tell that a lot of these telemarketers read off a script. The fun part is distracting them from reading and asking them questions where they actually have to think and attempt to sell you the product. I'll ask random questions, such as,

"Why do I need this product?" "What are some of the benefits?" "What is the catch?" "Where are you calling from?"

It's funny, in fact hilarious, to hear these telemarketers stumble, stutter, and give you the Uhh. Sometimes they just tell you to hold and transfer you to their "Closer" who is just as stupid.

Back to the phone call this morning from India....

I asked the telemarketer, "Where are you from?"
His reply, "I'm calling from Tampa, Florida."
Then I ask him, "Are you sure? Your accent sounds like you're in India. Don't lie to me"
He chuckles and replies, "The US company is based in Florida, I'm calling from India."
I ask, "Then why did you say you are calling from Tampa?"

He refused to answer and then resumed reading off his phone script.

I interrupted him again and told him to tell me some info about the free phone to me in his native language. He laughs again.

I asked him if he's Hindi. He said..."Yes sir."

I still wasn't sold on this free phone promotion and I told him to sell me this phone without reading the script. He couldn't!

I told the guy, "I know you're trying to make a living, but you really need to do a better job in selling me this promotion rather than just reading a script. Anyone can read."

That comment offended the guy and he said, "I don't think you need this cell phone, thank you for your time."

My only drawback, I didn't get a chance to tell the guy to remove me from his list. I was more focused on giving the caller a hard time, rather than telling them to remove my phone number from their list. Coming from a sales background, I think they need to do a better job. I know that if I had to make some phone calls, I'd be very creative in trying to keep the recipient interested in some way or form. Perhaps talk casually, in a comforting way....easier said than done.

Here is some useful information to have if you get a lot of telemarketer calls.

National Do Not Call Registry

By the way, I already registered but it hasn't been 30 days. After the 30 days, it's time to report them if they call again!
