Hang Up and Drive
Despite my need for speed, I consider myself a very safe driver. Especially when I'm driving with passengers in the car. I've been driving since my sixteenth birthday and have a flawless driving record. I've been in a few fender benders, but all of them were not my fault.
Since the popularity of cell phones existed, there are so many countless accidents and sometimes fatalities because some people are distracted from talking on the phone. What's to blame is the distraction the phone causes. It bad enough that you have to be alert while driving. It's even worse when you have one hand on the wheel and the other hand with a cell phone.
I can't wait until California passes the law (effective July 1, 2008) which makes the use of cell phones illegal while driving your car. Obviously, you can only operate your phone if utilizing a hands-free device. There are countless times where I've been on the road and some moron would swerve into my lane and as I pass them they have a cell phone to their ear. It pisses me off all the time. I sometimes get road rage which is caused by an idiot on the phone. I'll get pissed off and slowly/safely swerve into their lane just to get even. I've also encountered these morons on while walking on the street too.
Many people do no value the importance of keeping both hands on the wheel. I'm not sure if anyone has experience a high speed front tire blow out.....but you nearly need both hands on your steering wheel to gain control of your car. One hand on the wheel is not going to cut it.
This example is a bit extreme, but it'll give you an idea.
I was watching Champ Car Racing on ESPN the other night and saw this commercial with a good campaign. Handsonthewheel.org is a site that informs young drivers about the importance of driving with BOTH HANDS on the wheel.
I use a bluetooth device when talking on the phone while driving. It's bad enough that I drive stick shift..because I'll have to take my hand off the wheel to shift gears while my other hand is occupied with the phone. I can drive fine, but it's not safe at all.
Be safe on the road. Buy a handfrees device and be safe out there on the road.
