Got Tapeworms???

Mickey the innocent little dog with dominance aggression has a little problem with his intestines. He has Tapeworms!!! We're unsure how he contracted this problem, but it's obviously not from eating McDonald's Hamburgers. Mickey possibly contracted the tapeworm problem from eating a flea that hosted the tapeworm larvae. I also noticed that he also licks plants and grass, which can be another way he contracted it.

Tapeworms can be contagious to humans, but only contracted if we too eat the larvae from fleas or his stools.

I noticed that Mickey had this issue when I was taking him out for his routine walk around the neighborhood. As I picked up his poop, I noticed a white object about the size of grain of rice on his poop. Holding my breath and observing it a little more, I noticed that this grain of rice started moving!!

This discovery now gives me a solution as to why he has an increased appetite. Mickey is usually in the ballpark of seven pounds. He feels much heavier now. Mickey has been feeding the tapeworm in his intestines.

Yesterday, I decided to take Mickey to our local Banfield Pet Hospital in San Leandro for an evaluation. I also brought along with me a fresh stool sample with the little white friends crawling around. Gross huh?

We're waiting for the veterinarian and Mickey is very nervous as usual. He wants me to hold him. The assistant does a few tests to check his vitals and he's very docile. Mickey believe it or not is a very smart dog. He knows good and bad. He also tends to show aggression towards people he doesn't like. That person he didn't like was the veterinarian! The veterinarian wants to observe him, and Mickey was being very uncooperative. He kept twisting, turning, and making every attempt to push himself away. As the vet got closer, he tried to bite. This made the vet uncomfortable and the vet asked to muzzle him. Here's the result.

Notice his tongue hanging out! He is auditioning for the leading roll of Hannibal the Cannibal.

The vet gave him a shot that will kill the tapeworms and I have to treat Mickey with Advantage which is a topical medication that is applied to the skin of his neck to rid away fleas. We'll also follow up in two weeks for Mickey to have another tapeworm shot to assure total annihilation.

They also updated Mickey with all his routine vaccination. He had a total of three shots and one oral injection for Heartworms.

Mickey is at home recovering. His overall personality is the same.
