Are you burnt out?
I tend to find myself burnt out on many occasions. It's probably from being overworked. I work long hours, eat at late hours, and don't get much sleep. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that I need to take some time off to relax. You can tell that you're over worked when you are drained and barely have enough energy to even want to eat dinner at 9pm when your last meal was at noon. My eating schedule is terrible. No breakfast, lunch is eaten sometimes at 3pm, and dinner isn't until I get home at 8:30pm (sometimes later). The other drawback is the fact that I work on weekends too. When people are out enjoying the beautiful weekend weather, I'm stuck in a office pushing paper, and selling stuff to our customers. This is my ritual for all of the week. Then on one day of the week (sometimes two) I'll have time to myself. The drawback is the fact that my only day off happens to be on a day when everyone else is at work.
Someday, I hope to find myself out of this crazy work schedule. I love what I do career wise, but I don't like the long hours that I have to commit to. Long hours do take a toll on you and poor eating habits don't help as well. I'm sure that there are many people out there who work long hard hours, but at least they have quality time off. The business that I'm in, I still get interrupted on my days off. We do get vacation time off as well, but it's vacation time that has to be planned around the company work schedule.
To sum everything up. I don't plan on staying in the car business forever. Some people make an entire career out of it. The money does pay well, although there are many sacrifices that take place. The sacrifice of never being able to commit to an evening out, a nice beautifil weekend, working on a holiday execpt thanksgiving and christmas...the list goes on.
As I look into the future, I want a career that will give me the flexibility to see my friends, family, and loved ones. If I have kids, I want to be able to have time to see their sports events or dance recitals. In the meantime, the car business will not offer you that. I'm willing to sacrifice getting paid less, just to have more time on my hands. Ok...I'm getting depressed thinking about this. Time to just work through this phase in my life, and move on soon. Hopefully soon. Everyone else, don't work too hard. Do you live to work or work to live? I'm a little of both.
